Special limits of liability

What are special limits of liability?

Special limits are policy sub-limits capping recovery on particular property classes — commonly jewelry, furs, firearms, fine art, precious metals and money. They apply regardless of the total contents limit, which makes identifying and separately valuing that property during the inventory a decisive step on a commercial loss.

Special limits are why an itemized count matters more on some categories than others. Jewelry, firearms, furs, fine art, money and securities commonly carry sub-limits far below the overall contents limit, and property that falls into one of those categories is recoverable only up to that figure unless it was separately scheduled.

Recording those items individually, with identification and photographs, is the difference between applying the sub-limit correctly and applying it to a category that was never properly described. See specialty property.
